The site for the new Cyprus High School is awaiting essential utilities to be installed. Construction cannot begin until these utilities, such as water, are brought to the site. However, building plans have reached a point that construction can begin as soon as utilities are in place.

During the next few weeks it is anticipated the gymnasium and cafeteria structure will be completed, classroom wing #2 will be ready for drywall, and drywall will be completed in the administration area.

Progress of Elementary Security Updates

Granite School District has been working for the past few years to update security infrastructure at all school sites. With the help of the voter-approved 2017 bond, the progress of these projects has increased in recent years.

Security upgrades have been completed for the majority of elementary school sites. The most noticeable aspect of these upgrades are an extra set of security doors, which require all visitors to enter the main office and be approved by staff prior to entering the building.

Dates in the table below indicate the completion year or estimated construction commencement year for all elementary schools. Please note that these dates are part of an anticipated timeline, and may be altered as a result of rising construction costs or other factors.

Security upgrades at secondary schools are being installed along a separate timeline and require more extensive planning to address open-campus layouts.

New school at riverfront site to be named Olene Walker Elementary School

The Granite School District Board of Education has voted to name the new school at the riverfront site Olene Walker Elementary School in honor of Utah’s first female governor.

The school will open fall 2020 and will replace Roosevelt Elementary.

School officials, with input from students, parents and community members, will determine the official mascot, colors and logo of the school.

About Olene Walker

Governor Olene Walker was sworn into office in November of 2003 as Utah’s 15th governor. She served a two-year term, during which time she worked on several initiatives such as education programs and workforce development.

She received a bachelor degree from Brigham Young University, a master degree from Stanford University, and a doctorate from the University of Utah. Prior to entering politics, Walker founded the Salt Lake Education Foundation and served as its director.

Walker was a representative in the state Legislature for eight years and served a term as majority whip. She was Utah’s first woman to serve as lieutenant governor to Mike Leavitt. When Governor Leavitt resigned to serve as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Walker became Utah’s first female governor.
