South Kearns Elementary School will be rebuilt at its existing site. Students will attend school at a nearby location for the 2019-2020 school year during construction. This innovative school will be built with a focus on 21st century learning and long-term flexibility. The new school is anticipated to be completed summer 2020.
There is a Community Center that is separate from the school that can be used for before and after school functions and help provide important services to the surrounding community. The site itself is innovative in that the playgrounds have shade structures to help keep them playable year round. The play fields have artificial turf surfaces, which will allow an increase of heavy play without the normal wear and tear of grass fields.
There are four learning wings at South Kearns and a total of 30 classrooms, two maker labs, and two special education suites. Classrooms are designed with 12 ft wide roll-up glass doors, allowing them to combine with the Collaboration space or other classrooms. Flexible furniture will be used to help establish an easily transformable learning environment that can be changed to focus students on specific learning moment by moment.
The Dining area is integrated into the circulation to optimize space while providing flexible double height space for integrated learning that can be enhanced by the building. Large glass doors between the Dining area and the Multi-Purpose room lift up, allowing increased capacity for large assemblies or community events.
Security is a major focus in this school and several layers of protection are used to help make this school be as safe as possible.
