Artificial Turf Fields Condition Testing & Maintenance Recommendations 2022

Independent Field Testing

  • GSD wanted to understand field conditions from independent and unbiased professionals
  • GSD solicited for an independent artificial turf field testing consultant
  • FireFly was chosen in 1Q 2022
    • Firefly does not install fields
    • Firefly is a national company fully certified to inspect fields for K 12, College, and professional users
  • Firefly visited each location and conducted comprehensive testing in 2Q 2022

Testing

  • FireFly conducted testing spring of 2022
  • Most GSD fields are in reasonable condition or able to have maintenance improve their condition
    • 1 field was determined to have only 1 or 2 seasons of play left (Granger)
    • Wear was so significant that maintenance would only be able to add minimal levels of fill materials
  • Expectations have changed since grass fields
    • The expectation if to have softer and more aesthetically pleasing fields into the future
    • More days of play
  • GSD fields will be safe
  • GSD fields are in above average condition for their age
  • Only new fields (0 3 years old) will get very high marks
  • GSD maintenance will work over the summer to completed recommended maintenance
  • GSD will re test in the fall of 2022 to check the efficacy of summer maintenance

Maintenance

  • We have field specific maintenance recommendations
  • Most field issues can be solved with summer maintenance
  • GSD has been asked to perform a scarification process with a tined rake
    • We have not done that procedure before
  • This should have significant positive impact on the preparation of the play surface
    • It loosens up compacted materials
    • Stands up fibers
      • Standing fibers allow for more infill to be placed
  • Infill will be placed after scarification
  • Increased infill remediates most negative play and safety considerations as measured this spring

Project Scope

Proposed Remediation ( in Order)

  • Repair all open seams
  • Perform Maintenance using drag brush/tines to scarify surface and by first facing fibers all in one direction, followed by the same procedure in opposing direction. The goal of this will be to stand fibers in preparation for additional infill.
  • Add infill to carpet capacity in areas of high wear. In isolated areas (goal mouths) if sufficient infill cannot be achieved, a replacement patch should be installed.
  • Check infill depth consistency and repeat as necessary until proper infill depths are achieved.

Long Term Maintenance

  • Repeat as needed, per manufacturer’s recommendations
  • Perform maintenance prior to annual g-max testing
  • Rotate drag brush annually to prevent directional sag.
